How to Prepare Ground for a Child’s Playset

When building a high-quality wood playground set for children in the backyard, choosing the right ground is a crucial issue. Flat and stable ground not only ensures safety but also prevents structural deformation and extends the lifespan of the equipment. Here are several standard steps for preparing the ground to share with everyone.

Step 1: Accurate Site Selection and Safety Buffering

When choosing the ground, it is essential to ensure the safety of children, as safety begins with proper space planning. Avoid obstacles in the yard such as fences, trees, overhanging branches, and utility lines. Do not choose these areas to prevent children from bumping into them. Select a relatively flat area.

Another important point: a safety buffer zone of at least 6 feet (about 1.8 meters) must be left around the entire perimeter of the play area. This is especially critical for a multifunctional outdoor swing set with slide to ensure children have adequate safe landing space when sliding out.

Step 2: Clearing and Excavating

After selecting the location, the surrounding area needs to be cleared. Thoroughly remove obstacles such as stones, roots, and weeds inside the area and around the perimeter.

Subsequently, perform turf stripping and excavate inward by about 3 to 4 inches (about 7.5 to 10 centimeters). Removing the turf and topsoil can effectively prevent organic matter from rotting beneath the foundation, avoiding structural tilting caused by future ground sinking.

Step 3: Ground Leveling (Strictly Forbid Building on Slopes)

Please do not build on slopes!!! Some people choose slopes to save space, which is too dangerous!!! Never use loose soil to fill low spots, because loose soil will gradually settle under heavy weight. The correct method is to cut the high and fill the low, digging the high soil flat until it aligns with the lowest point.

Use a long wooden board and a level indicator to strictly measure the entire area. If you plan to install a monkey bar swing set that includes climbing functions, the absolute levelness of the ground is vital; otherwise, it will cause uneven stress when children climb, creating safety hazards.

Step 4: Laying Weed Barrier and Installing Border Fences

If you want to reduce later maintenance costs, please lay a good foundation when you are preparing for installation.

Please lay professional-grade gardening weed-barrier film inside the excavated pit. This not only prevents weeds from penetrating the protective layer but also ensures normal rainwater infiltration and drainage. Next, use landscaping timber or interlocking plastic guardrails to build a stable border frame around the four sides to secure the subsequent filling of loose buffer materials.

Step 5: Filling Shock-Absorbing Buffer Materials

Never place wooden swing sets for kids directly on hard dirt or concrete. Shock-absorbing materials that meet safety standards can be filled within the fenced area. Commonly used materials include: professional playground wood fiber (EWF), rubber mats/rubber particles, washed fine gravel, etc.

For the residential market, it is recommended to maintain the thickness of loose fill materials at 6 to 9 inches (about 15 to 23 centimeters) to provide sufficient fall impact protection.

Step 6: Structural Anchor Fixation

After all ground preparation work is completed, the main body can be assembled. No matter which model you choose from the best backyard swing sets on the market, you must use the ground anchors provided by the manufacturer to firmly lock the support legs underground to prevent tilting during intense swinging.

Once all these steps are done, you can safely assemble the wooden swing set. If there is anything you still do not understand, you can contact us, and we will guide your installation.
