What to Put Under a Swing Set?

More and more families are choosing to build backyard playgrounds for their children. When their own playground is set up, happy smiles appear on the children’s faces. However, when children slide down from the slide and look at the empty ground, do you feel a hint of unease? Yes, when children slide down and buffer to the ground, what should be paved on the ground to ensure their safety?

To ensure the safety of children and to make the “home backyard project” both safe and easy to maintain, I will summarize a few “pitfalls” often encountered in real life. First, it must be clear: the swing set area is not just directly underneath; a buffer zone of at least 1.8m (6 feet) is required on the left and right sides, as well as in the front and back directions.

1. Most Commonly Used and Cost-Effective — Rubber Mulch

This rubber mulch is not real wood mulch; it does not rot easily, does not attract bugs, and drains quickly. Its maintenance cost is low, and you don’t need to replenish it every year like real wood mulch.

Cons: The particles scatter easily and are prone to being carried away when cleaning the yard. Moreover, when the sun shines directly in summer, the dark rubber particles absorb a lot of heat, sometimes have a rubber smell, and can easily burn feet after long exposure. It is not recommended to use it blindly in “hard-to-maintain, high-leaf-fall” sites.

2. Strong Sense of Atmosphere and Beautiful Engineered Wood Fiber (EWF)

Engineered wood fiber can be understood as a more professional wood fiber system. The particles are finer and more even after paving, and the initial cost is low and naturally beautiful.

Cons: They are prone to moisture and rot and may be more easily lost in rainy areas. If you have a low budget and want a balance of safety and cost, you can choose this. However, it requires regular raking and replenishing.

3. The Aesthetic Choice of the Backyard — Artificial Grass

The budget for this may be high; if your budget is limited, it is suggested not to consider it. However, paving artificial grass is truly neat and beautiful. Even after it rains, children can still go out to play.

Note: If paving, remember to install a specialized Shock Pad under the grass; otherwise, it is just a thin layer of plastic and does not have enough buffering force.

4. Rubber Mats or Safety Pads

Comparatively, rubber mats have the best performance and worry-free maintenance. However, the initial investment is also high. Like rubber mulch, you must also note that they may get hotter under summer sun exposure.

5. Sand

Some users ask if they can pave sand. You can, but it is hard to maintain. The cost of sand is low, but it easily gets everywhere, mixes with debris, and is easily contaminated by small animals, which is not very child-friendly.

Other Points to Note Before Installing a Swing Set:

Weed Barrier: Regardless of the material, if grass grows frequently underground, it will be troublesome. It is suggested to pave a layer of high-quality weed barrier at the bottom to avoid grass growing in the mulch later.

Leaf Cleanup: If there are many trees in your yard, autumn leaves will affect cleaning. In this case, artificial grass or large rubber mats will help solve the cleaning difficulty.

Thickness: How thick should it be? Generally, for loose materials like wood mulch/EWF, it is suggested to pave about 20–30cm. If your swing set is higher, children are older, and use it more frequently, the thickness can be greater. To avoid materials being compacted or kicked away when children play, it is best to reserve space for replenishing.

Summary:

If you pursue high cost-performance, you can choose Rubber Mulch; if you have a sufficient budget and pursue neatness, you can choose Artificial Grass; if you pursue natural beauty, you can choose Wood Fiber.

For cost-performance and safety, choose Rubber Mulch; for natural beauty, choose high-quality Wood Fiber; for neatness, easy maintenance, and a sufficient budget, go directly with Artificial Grass.
